7:00 AM at Ipsut Creek TH - beyond MRNP Carbon River Ranger Station
Sluiskin Squaw, 6960' (4-2) (USGS Sunrise & Mowich Lake) 15 mi., 5700' gain. Meet at the Ipsut Creek TH by 7 a.m. Limit of 6 students. This will be an adventurous and picturesque high alpine stroll for those able and willing to put forth the effort. The plan is to summit the Squaw via the standard Northern Loop Trail over Windy Gap, then continue on to the NW exploring the Papooses, turn to the WSW and ramble along the length of Crescent Mountain before plunging down through the forest to the NW and rejoining the Wonderland Trail near its junction with the Northern Loop. There’ll be plenty of navigating and routefinding, and views to all sides including Mother Mountain, the Yellowstone Cliffs, Sluiskin Chief, the Elysian Fields, Vernal Park, and the aptly named Old Desolate. Finally, there’s Rainier, with its spectacular and formidable Willis Wall framed by Curtis, Liberty, and Ptarmigan Ridges filling the southern skyline for over two miles of what promises to be a memorable journey.
