8:00 AM at PCT Trailhead Snoqualmie Pass
In most years, Red is a good rock scramble in June, providing an excellent environment for perfecting foot placement for best traction and rock-fall avoidance. As this is written, the summit rock is only beginning to peek through. In areas less exposed to the sun, there will probably be well-consolidated snow. In other words, we should be prepared for both snow and rock - no matter what you prefer, you'll probably have some! We'll be (mostly) following the old PCT trail into Commonwealth Basin, though staying on the south side of the main Commonwealth Creek. The trail will likely be buried in snow. If you don't already have a copy of the Snoqualmie Pass 7.5' map, you can download a free scanned image of it in the TIFF format from: http://duff.geology.washington.edu/data/raster/drg/wenatchee/index.html The PCT trailhead - including parking lot - is currently under an estimated 3' of snow. Parking is available on both sides of FS 58, adjacent to the PCT trailhead, if it is not yet plowed or melted out. Helmets are required. Student S/R credit will depend on conditions. Please address all questions to Frank Miles (pedicularis@earthlink.net).
