Red Pass & Mountain (Commonwealth Basin)

Trip

Alpine Scramble - Red Mountain (Commonwealth Basin)

SeattleStudentScramble: this will be a student-centric scramble of Red Mountain, with views (in favorable weather) of the Snoqualmie Pass and Alpine Lakes peaks, and (in favorable conditions) a good long scramble. We may need to deal with some loose rock (on and around excellent firm rock) on the ascent, so both rock and snow travel/ice ax skills will be challenged and instructed during the course of this trip.

  • Strenuous 3, Technical 4
  • Moderate
  • Mileage: 9.0 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 2,900 ft
  • Pace: Moderate

We will leave from the PCT/Commonwealth Basin Trailhead, but we will first meet at the WSDOT rest station (indoor well-maintained toilets) known as Travelers' Rest in Snoqualmie Pass: from Seattle, take eastbound I-90 to Exit 52/West Summit, turn right at the bottom of the exit, continue east -- paralleling the freeway on the ski area service road -- for about half a mile as you pass a restaurant, gas station, and convenience store on your left and Dru Brew and Commonwealth Restaurant on your right.  Travelers' Rest will be on your left (the WSDOT bathrooms are in the west end of a building shared with a coffee shop/gift shop on the east end).

We will meet at Travelers' Rest at 7:45 and then move on over to the trailhead by 8:00 a.m.  Please make car pool arrangements for yourselves using the emails associated with the party members listed on the trip roster.  I don't need to be copied with your car-pooling emails unless there is some problem.

For last-minute cancellations, concerns, questions, inquiries, my text/phone is 206. 632. 3266, but be aware that I may not have coverage up in the Pass.  I will be driving a  blue/grey Toyota RAV4 with license plate beginning BLY.  Please use email for all earlier communications.  I will send out a more detailed update email Saturday night or Sunday morning.

Please make some effort to determine a plausible route and print/bring a paper map (though it's fine if you also want to load a relevant GPS track) and be prepared to discuss route options at the trailhead.

Please give current students priority until the last 24 hours of the sign-up period.  If you are not a student, please be aware we will be taking extra time along the way to practice snow and rock skills: please either be patient or, better yet, help instruct!
