Alpine Scramble - Old Desolate

Overnight camping and scrambling between Carbon and Winthrop Glaciers.

  • Pace: 2.5 mph on trail and 1500 feet gain

We will meet at the Sunrise  Ranger Station at 7.30 AM to pick up permits

*We will be doing this climb from sunrise visitor center vs Carbon river to avoid the bike ride and also to enjoy hiking between the toes of two Rainier glaciers *

*Leaders permission required for recent conditioning and Covid safety*

Considering the long nature of the trip (2 days and requiring camping) and also requiring permits in the cross country zone, participants with history of last minute cancellations are not allowed to sign up 

We will move at a brisk pace on the first and second day. 

Trip Itinerary : 
High level plan - Will send detailed plan before the trip
Saturday : 
1. Pick up permits at Ranger station at 7.30 AM 
2. Park cars at the overnight TH and start hiking at 8AM
3. Set up camp below Mineral Mountain and climb mineral mountain
4. Head back to camp and rest
1. Wake up at 6.30AM and climb Old Desolate
2. Come back to camp, pack camp 
3. Head back to cars and reach cars by 3PM

1. Approach shoes/mountaineering boots
2. Ice axe & helmet
3. Tents
4. Sleeping Bags/ Sleeping pads
