  • Technical 2, Strenuous 3
  • Moderate
  • Mileage: 4.0 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 2,000 ft

We will meet at the Martin Way Park and Ride in Lacey, WA.  To get to the park and ride exit I-5 at Martin Way (Exit 109) and turn east on Martin Way.  It is less than 0.25 mi to the park and ride, which is located on the north side of Martin Way.

Arrive at the park and ride at 4:45am with the intent of leaving no later than 5:00.  The reasons for this early start are:  (a) it is a long (~22 mi) drive on Forest Service roads and (b) there are two possible approaches and if the road turns us back on the intended one, we would still have time to try the alternative approach.

We will be trying the "standard route" this year, not the one listed on The Mountaineers website; I have done that route three times (twice successful and once we had an accident) and it has taken way too long with a group.  Additionally, there is quite a bit of traversing, through steep forested terrain, which contributed to the accident.  The standard route is more or less up/down so I hope to eliminate some of the traversing.  What I am calling the standard route is the route listed in the Climber's Guide to the Olympic Mountains, 3rd Ed. (same in newer edition).  Depending on how far we can make it up the road (FS 2355), the actual scrambling distance is short, probably less than 2 miles and the gain is only about 2000 ft - but I feel certain you will feel like you have worked for this summit!  I will send a map of the proposed route as the time approaches.

The book rates this as Grade 1, Class 2, which I think is pretty accurate.

Required gear:

  1. helmet
  2. harness (or webbing to make one)
  3. prusik loop
  4. 1 locking carabiner

Optional gear:

  1. I like an ice ax because the terrain is very steep and most of this scramble will be through the woods on steep terrain.
  2. Safety glasses
