  • Strenuous 1, Technical 2
  • Challenging
  • Mileage: 32.0 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 4,400 ft

The meeting place and time are:  Staircase Ranger Station, Olympic National Park at 7:30 am.  If desired, those leaving from Olympia can meet at the Martin Way Park and Ride at about 6:00 am to arrange carpooling.

The Climber's Guide to the Olympic Mountains, 3rd Ed., lists Mount Steel as Class 1 and Mt. Hopper as Class 2.  In my opinion that book usually under rates the climbs, and since I have not done these scrambles I do not know exactly what to expect.  However, from what I can glean from the guide books and talking to those who have done Hopper, they should be rather straight forward.

I have listed this as "challenging" mainly because of the hiking distances (about 12 miles in and out plus the scrambling mileage) and the fact that we will be attempting to scramble both mountains in one day (5 July).  I think the default strenuous rating of T1 is too low.

Since I am not sure of the snow conditions I have listed crampons and ice axe as required gear.  I think there is a good chance that we will not need them; I will try to find out more before the scramble.  Anyway, pack them on top so they are easy to leave at the car if we so decide.
