Alpine Scramble - Mount Roosevelt & Kaleetan Peak

A long, challenging loop scramble of two classic Snoqualmie 20 peaks with multiple alpine lakes. Mentored scramble for Emily Goren.

  • Strenuous 4, Technical 5
  • Challenging
  • Mileage: 14.0 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 4,800 ft

This is a long and challenging scramble, but worth it for the beautiful scenery.  We will do a loop route starting at Alpental/Snow Lake TH and ending at Denny Creek TH. To facilitate this, we’ll meet at the Denny Creek TH, leave 1-2 cars to shuttle on our return, and drive to the Alpental/Snow Lake TH.

We’ll start by hiking to Gem Lake. Next head up Roosevelt (weather permitting), descend to Chair Lake (where there may be lingering snow), and cross near Melakwa Pass. Climb Kaleetan via White Ledges (weather permitting), and drop back to the Upper Melakwa basin via the East gully for the hike to Denny Creek TH. Both the approach to Gem Lake and hike out from Melakwa Lake are on good trail.

Participants should be experienced and competent scrambling loose dirt, rock (both loose and solid), scree, and talus. Conditioning for a long day in the mountains is important too. The group is expected to contribute to route finding. There is a steep and spicy dirt gully on Roosevelt. We will be taking the White Ledges route to Kaleetan Peak, which is a steep and sporty but aesthetic rock route.

When requesting leader’s permission, tell me about your experience and comfort with T4+ rock scrambles and recent long, high elevation gain trips.
