  • Strenuous 5, Technical 2
  • Mileage: 11.0 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 5,300 ft
6:00 AM at See notes
Pugh is located at the eastern part of the Mountain Loop Highway SE of Darrington. The views of Glacier, Sloan, Whitehorse, Whitechuck and others are fabulous
ROUTE:
There is a summer trail to the summit. But we won’t see top the 4000 feet of that trail because it under snow. However, if you look at the map (see links below), you can see the route we will follow.
DIFFICULTY:
The total gain from the trail head is about 5300’. The distance is about 11 miles. There is a good chance the road will be blocked about a mile from the trailhead adding about 500 bonus feet. The summer rating for this trip is 5-2 (strenuous, but not very technical). That 2 is because of the trail. We will find steep snow, so the technical rating for us will be a 4.
STUDENTS:
Students who have completed at least one other snow scramble and are comfortable with their ice axe arrest skills are welcome to join us.
GEAR:
Ice Axe - Required.
Helmet - Required.
Crampons – Leave them at home.
Scramble harness - Not required
Northwest Forest Pass - Required for each car at the trailhead
Be sure your boots are recently waterproofed.
