Alpine Scramble - Mount Index/East Route

Mt. Index via Lake Serene: One of the most challenging scrambles we offer, and one of the most infrequently led.

COVID-19: Learn about our most up-to-date guidance for participants and leaders on our COVID-19 Response page. All participants and leaders must agree to the COVID-19 Code of Conduct before participating in this Mountaineers activity.
  • Technical 5, Strenuous 5
  • Challenging
  • Mileage: 13.0 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 5,500 ft
  • Pace: Moderate but steady for a sustained period.

The group will leave the Lake Serene TH at 5:00 a.m.  It's a close call whether this is worth a parking lot car-camp or not, that I'll leave up to the individual party members (haven't made up my own mind, have done it both ways).

This trip could have it all: a well-maintained trail for the first couple thousand feet, possible boulder hopping, some steep rock scrambling with the aid of green belay up the steep nose of a spur, then some sustained snow travel, including some steep snow and then a little bit more rock scrambling.  There is one crux point in the trip where we need a snow bridge to still be in place and there's no easy way to guarantee that in advance (though as the date draws closer, we will consult trip reports and it's not impossible that I'll undertake a reconnaissance from Baring -- though I have not yet committed to that and the view is a distant one that, again, does not guarantee that the snow bridge remains in place).
