Alpine Scramble - Mount Hoquiam

This is a nice southwest Olympic Mountains scramble. A significant portion is on boot track. This is followed by a bush whack along the ridge to the Class 2 summit. Preference given to Olympia Branch Alpine Scrambling students until 20 June 2025.

  • Strenuous 3, Technical 3
  • Moderate
  • Mileage: 6.0 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 2,000 ft
  • High Point Elevation: 4,909 ft
  • Pace: 1.25 mph

This scramble can be done in about 6 to 7 hours so assess your fitness level with this goal in mind.   I like to keep the group together so plan on traveling as a group.

The brush bash along the ridge is kinda crabby!  If you will not be wearing eye glasses or sunglasses, you may want to consider bringing a pair of safety glasses.

The road out to the start is not great.  Last year we had two flat tires.  I have had my Subaru Outback in there several times, the key is just to drive slow.  If you have truck - bring it!

Meet at the Martin Way Park Ride in Lacey, WA.  Take Exit 109 from I-5 and turn east on Martin Way; it is about an eighth of a mile to the Park and Ride.

Time:  4:45 am

Plan to be on the road by 5 am.
