NOTE: The meeting time is 7:30, not 8:00 (I didn't catch this earlier). This is an Instructional Snow Scramble. While non-students are welcome and the summit is AN objective, time will also be taken to demonstrate and practice snow travel skills, including in-balance, in-rhythm step-kicking with ice ax, ice ax arrest, and glissading. Also, conditions and time permitting, avalanche analysis/avoidance. This means that non-student participants should anticipate that the party will take additional time along the way to practice these skills. Thus, while there is no requirement that non-students participate in the demo and practice, your patience will be appreciated and any assistance (particularly by qualified field trip instructors or leaders) would certainly be welcome. (Note also, for any leader-applicants out there, that the leader is a mentor leader and--if you need a mentored lead as part of your leader-confirmation process, this scramble will qualify.) The scramble route on Mt. Forgotten includes steep, open forest terrain, and--once alpine terrain is reached--side-hilling on steep snow and a steep ascent and descent of the summit gully. Because this is a 4-4 rated scramble, it makes for an excellent and realistic test of snow travel skills. This scramble is also a good introduction to the many pleasures of hiking, scrambling, and climbing in the Mountain Loop/Monte Cristo area. On any reasonably nice day, Mr. Forgotten is perched smack-dab in the middle of the Monte Cristo/Mountain Loop, with outstanding views toward Three Fingers, Whitehorse, Whitechuck, Mt. Pugh, Glacier Peak, Sloan Peak, Bedal Peak, Cadet, Monte Cristo, Kyes Peak, Columbia Peak, Gothic, Del Campo, Morningstar, Sperry, Vesper, and Big Four...
