Alpine Scramble - Mount Adams/South Spur

Summer Solstice scramble up Mount Adams. Priority for Kitsap scramble students and grads with prior experience at altitude (MSH, Camp Muir) until May 20. Other branches please do not ask permission until then.

  • Strenuous 5, Technical 4
  • Challenging
  • Mileage: 14.0 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 6,600 ft
  • Pace: 1000ft/hr

Likely itinerary:

Fri. June 20 - meet Friday night at Cold Springs CG or as close as we can get to it. Camp at Cold Springs.

Sat. June 21 - Depart early Saturday morning (time TBD) to avoid climbing in the heat of the day. Reach Lunch Counter at 9,400ft in early afternoon. Set up camp, acclimatize, hike to get water on the eastside of LC.

Sun. June 22 - Depending on conditions, we prefer to start up around 7am (vs. alpine start) to avoid icy conditions and descend around noon by glissading. We'll be taking it fairly slow on ascent to avoid altitude sickness, but the goal is to be off the summit by noon. We'll break camp, hopefully get some glissading down from LC, and plan to reach Cold Springs around 4pm. Please do not make plans for that evening. Altitude and other issues have kept us from our cars until 8pm in past years. We'd rather not repeat that, but we can't guarantee you'll be home for dinner Sunday evening.

When you request permission, please let us know about past excursions to altitude and how you did, as well as 4000ft days you've done or plan to do before the climb. People who sign up without requesting permission will be removed.

Bad weather will cancel the climb (winds above 25mph, rain/snow forecast).

Friday evening, June 20, Cold Springs Campground or as close as we can get. Possible carpools available from Olympia or Trout Lake Ranger Station.
