Merchant is that impressive peak near Baring, just across from Barclay Lake. It isn't scrambled very often, probably due to the high rock fall hazard. This is an attempt (as Smoot recommends) to be late enough to avoid avalanches, while retaining enough snow to keeps the rocks in their place. This is not a good trip for those leary of exposure, or beginning students. Students may come, but must have previously enjoyed a T-4 scramble, or have leader permission. Helmets and sling/biner/harness required. Maybe crampons or a good traction aid like MicroSpikes (still thinking about that). I'll probably ask for someone to bring/carry a shovel and avy probe.
