Alpine Scramble - McLeod Mountain

Pivoting destination to NOT McLeod, but Setting Sun, a bit further to the west along this ridgeline.

  • Strenuous 2, Technical 2
  • Moderate
  • Mileage: 6.0 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 2,200 ft
  • Pace: slower side of moderate

Goat Creek SnoPark at 9am.  Will then drive up somewhat rough forest roads to locate the start of our scramble.

Note: the leader is coming from the Methow Valley side, so will not be directly facilitating carpools for those coming from Puget Sound.

From our meeting place at Goat Creek SnoPark, we will drive up the road towards Goat Peak LO, but turn off into the Black Pine drainage.  We will drive as far as reasonable, before ditching  vehicles, and  heading to intersect the south ride of Setting Sun.  Expect some hiking through an old burn, navigating along ridge lines, breezy to windy conditions, and views!  Setting Sun was a lookout back in the day, and commands an interesting view down into the Lost River drainage.

Overall goals for the trip are safety, enjoyment of our natural environment as summer morphs into fall, possible larch viewing, and creating a team that has a fun and enjoyable time together, supporting each other along the way.   My pace is not fast, barely even moderate, so jack rabbits would best choose another outing.

This trip is part of my new Methow Mountaineers activity series, looking to develop more Mounties community in and adjacent to the Methow Valley, for those who live in or enjoy visiting this amazing area.  All are welcome!
