McClellan Butte


Alpine Scramble - McClellan Butte

Trail start at 2250' on well maintain dirt road so trip is 7.5-8 mile, 2900' gain. Great student rock scramble. Last 200+ feet to summit is true rock scramble with fun open slope exposure on reliable rock.

12:30pm TH off Forest road @ 2250' elevation.   

(Not new TH @ 1600' elevation via Exist 42 that is shown on Mountaineers standard post directions. 8-9 miles/3500' gain)


Take Exit 38 off I-90. Follow SE Homestead Valley Rd for about 2 miles and take a right on Forest Road 9020 (if you miss it you will end up on I-90 ramp again). Follow the forest road for about 2.5 miles where it intersects with the McClellan Butte trail and park on the forest road. The road is bit wider just past the intersection to allow parking for a few cars.

fyi:  Sunset is 7:10pm so we have time to return to cars with daylight and work
