Parking strip on the westbound lane of US2 just east of Smith Brook Road at 8:00 AM.
- From Stevens Pass, continue in the eastbound lanes of US-2 for 5.7 miles.
- Turn left opposite the Stevens Pass Nordic Center to access the westbound lanes
- Turn left onto the westbound lanes and drive 1.5 miles to the parking strip on the right
Parking is very limited at the trailhead. We'll consolidate at the US-2 parking strip before continuing up Smith Brook Rd.
There's a climbers' boot path from Smith Brook Rd that leads past Lichtenwasser Lake and up the NE ridge to within 100' of the summit. Some scrambling over boulders, under trees, and up steep heather gets us to the SE ridge for the walkup. Pace will be on the slow side of Moderate.
After summit lounging on a prominent boulder we'll continue on the NW ridge to an overlook of Lake Valhalla. Some of us may opt for the optional summit of Lichtenberg II, the pinnacle seen in many photos rising above Lake Valhalla.
Following the attempt we'll traverse eastward across a boulder field to regain the NE ridge for the descent.
