Alpine Scramble - Kendall Peak

Trip

Alpine Scramble - Kendall Peak

A fun rock scramble with excellent views of the surrounding mountains, plenty of fall foliage, and a scenic approach on the PCT.

  • Strenuous 3, Technical 2
  • Moderate
  • Mileage: 13.5 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 3,200 ft
  • High Point Elevation: 5,781 ft
  • Pace: 2.0-2.5 mph

The trip pace will be between 2.0-2.5 mph. We will take 5-10 minute breaks after every hour with a ~30 minute stop at the summit for lunch; I am hoping to limit stops to just these breaks. There are few water sources along the trail so please bring adequate water for  your day (at least 2 liters).

This scramble features a beautiful approach on the Pacific Crest Trail. At around 5,350 feet, we will leave the trail and  ascend east up to a ridge which we will follow south to Kendall Peak. Be prepared to scramble on loose dirt and loose, chossy rock. Hiking poles may be helpful for balance.

If the group desires, we may detour to Kendall Katwalk after descending from Kendall Peak.

This is a mentored scramble for Rose Gear. Please direct all questions to both Rose Gear and Carolyn Graham.

Be ready to go at the Kendall Katwalk trailhead at 8 am.

Note that a Northwest Forest Pass or America the Beautiful Pass are required to park at the trailhead.
