7:00 at Melakwa Lake TH
The Melakwa lakes area is one of my favorites. The trail (which hopefully will have made its appearance by the trip date) is nicely varied, there should be lots of wildflowers, and the lakes and surrounding area are gorgeous. To top it off there's a nice scramble of a peak that looks impressively vertical from other viewpoints. Students are welcome, but please note: while the pace will be moderate, breaks will be limited - as this is a moderately long scramble for one day. You must be in good condition. Feel free to inquire via email if you not sure. UPDATE: The most recent report (July 16) has snow on the trail approaching Hemlock Pass. We should not need crampons. However the reports of loose rock mean that everyone should bring their climbing helmet. The plan is to proceed up towards Melakwa Pass from Upper Melakwa lake, taking the proper gully up the ridge south of Kaleetan. Our return should be along the ridge towards the pit toilet above lower Melakwa.
