Unlike the official route description, the preliminary plan is to go in by the West Fork of the Foss River (by Copper lake, Little & Big Heart lake, then Chetwoot) on its way to Iron Peak. We'll ascend the west ridge of Iron Cap, and descend the east ridge, keeping to its northern face. We'll descend into Necklace valley, following that trail back to the Necklace valley trailhead. This route is slightly longer than the standard (est 19.5 miles), and gains about 6000' in two days. It covers a lot of beautiful country - just look at the Big Snow Mountain 7.5' map! It will require that each of the participants be able to scramble a considerable distance each day with their overnight gear and two days of food. You'll want to travel as lightly as possiible, though with all the usual scramble gear - including crampons, as we may come upon hard snow. Before the trip we'll make some effort to organize gear - to share tents & cooking gear. Nasty weather will cancel. Please e-mail me if you are interested in going on this trip - no phone calls. What I'm looking for is some measure of your training/physical fitness, and to some extent scramble skills. Tell me about some scrambles or climbs that you've done in the past year. You don't have to be super/wo/man (I'm not!) - I just don't want to have someone realize midway through the trip that they did not train enough. {Please note- I will be out of e-mail range during the second full week of August} If you want to substitute something else for crampons (I will bring my MicroSpikes), please ask.
