Alpine Scramble - Gove Peak

Spring scramble of an infrequently scrambled peak in the NW corner of Mountain Rainier National Park.

  • Winter Scramble
  • For Beginners (Getting Started Series)

Meet at the South Renton Park and Ride at 5:45 AM. Meet at the south end of the lot right across Grady Way from the Mac Donald’s.

Gove Peak is one of the "Mount Rainier 100" peaks. It is not a famous peak like those near Paradise or Sunrise, but it is reported to have nice views and is guaranteed to be a wilderness experience.  This trip does not look very far on the map, but other reports indicate it will take 9-10 hours round trip.

Bikes!!

The trip requires riding bikes for about 3 miles on a gentle gravel road that is no longer accessible to cars.  Any sort of bike is adequate, but a mountain or hybrid bike will be best.  A skinny tire road bike won't be very comfortable with a pack.  I have 2 extra bikes I can lend out, one of which has a seat that can be lowered for women at least 5'-2" tall. Let me know if you want to borrow one.  I can carry 5 bikes in/on my car.  If you also can carry a couple bikes, this would be a great trip for you to be a carpool driver.

Bring normal spring scramble equipment.

Too keep our packs lighter, we will stop to filter water near Green Lake on the ascent and descent.  Bring a filter if you have one.  We will stash them near the creek so we don't have to carry them on the scramble section of the route.
