Alpine Scramble - Gobblers Knob

[Due to terrain more suited to Mountain Goats and cloven hooves (see related trip report) we turned around and consoled ourselves mid-trip with a scramble to Goblers Knob.] Wowish views of Mount Rainier, and while normally a relatively dry trip (only a few stream crossings, if that ;), this very exploratory (and strenuous) traverse will visit Lake George as well as Lake Allen. Even better, this scramble for folks fully vaccinated against COVID should miss the mosquitos (being a late season trip).

  • Strenuous
  • Challenging
  • Mileage: 14.0 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 4,000 ft
  • High Point Elevation: 6,040 ft

Arranged via email.

This trip begins (and ends) at the Dry Falls parking area.  After a very tame road walk and trail hike to Lake George, we fully engage in northwest brush craft after traveling the fading trail on Lake George’s western shore.  We will gain the crest of the northwestern ridge leading to Wow’s northern summit at either ~5000’ (the route with more trees) or ~5400’ (the steeper route with an avalanche track affording less brush).  The real crux of this route is the final ~300’ between 5500’ and 5800’.  Once we reach Wow’s northern summit (5921’) the traverse to the southern summit (6040’) should be a nice change of pace due to the beautiful meadows (they are just east of the summit ridge line).  More meadows down to Lake Allen and after a very steep descent we’ll finally rejoin the West Side Road with a final ~1.5 mile road walk back to the cars.

Due to this route’s exploratory nature I’d guess S4/T5 with ~10 miles (round trip) and ~3500’ elevation gain.
