10:00 AM at Ingalls Creek Trailhead

McClellan Peak (Enchantments) 8364' (S5-T4) (USGS Blewett, Enchantment Lakes), 19 mi, 6500' gain (2 days).

McClellan Peak is the southern portal of the east end of the Enchantments. It's one of the 100 highest summits in Washington and provides a magnificent vista of one of the most scenic areas in our fine state.

We'll have an easy day on Saturday, driving over Swauk (Blewett) Pass and hiking 5.3 miles in to a campsite at the junction of the Ingalls Creek and Falls Creek Trails. On Sunday we'll get an early start and climb 5000' up McClellan's fantastic southern flank (see Dee Molenaar's sketch in the CAG) to its summit. We'll then descend via Crystal Lake and gaze directly up at the Nightmare Needles as we drop down Crystal Creek. Back on the Ingalls Creek Trail, we'll pack up our overnight gear and return to the trailhead for the drive home. The route has been done before, it's just not described in the Seattle Mountaineers scramble literature. It should be a memorable trip.

Helmet, ice axe and emergency descent gear (diaper sling harness, locking carabiner and Klemheist loop) are required for each participant, as is a NW Forest Pass for each vehicle. Keep in mind that Sunday will be 5000' up, 6500' down and 13 miles, so you need to be in good condition with several other 3500'+ climbs already under your belt this season.

Sign up with me; sorry no students.
