Cowlitz Rocks is one of the Rainier 100 Peaks, and offers more solitude than many other points accessed from Paradise. It is best done in good weather, both for route-finding and for the amazing views afforded both en route and from the summit. It is appropriate for current scramble students and we will take time to practice ice axe skills. While leader has been here once before, we will work as a group on navigation and route selection. Recent reports indicate that crampons were useful (see Peakbagger), but I am not sure they will be necessary. Hence, will ask ideally that both Micro Spikes and crampons to be brought by participants so that we won't be foiled by conditions. Pace will be on the slightly slower side of moderate, to practice skills and keep group together.
