Alpine Scramble - Central Cowlitz Chimney

Cowlitz Main Chimney and Cowltiz Central Chimney for a long one day trip

COVID-19: Learn about our most up-to-date guidance for participants and leaders on our COVID-19 Response page. All participants and leaders must agree to the COVID-19 Code of Conduct before participating in this Mountaineers activity.
  • Basic Alpine Climb, Technical 5, Sternous 4
  • Challenging
  • Mileage: 21.0 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 6,300 ft
  • Pace: 2.5mph and 1500 feet and hour

We will meet at the TH at 6AM.

The plan is to hike the Summer land trail all the way to Pan handle gap.

From there we will go off-trail to climb Cowlitz Main Chimey first and then head back and drop back packs below Central peak.

Participants should note that, we will be doing this as a scramble - aka, please be comfortable scrambling Class 4 terrain - without any assistance for the rope. We might use a handline to get down, if the downclimb is exposed.

Considering the amount of loose rock in the terrain - we will limit the group to only 4 members, who can move fast (aka 1700 feet and 2.5-3 miles an hour). Participants who can move quickly on scramble terrain will be given preference for this trip.

If you have any questions, please reach out to the leader directly
