Second Mother, Third Mother and Castle Peaks. LOCATION:
These are in the Mowich Lake area of Mt Rainier. Here is a link that shows some pictures of the area, (scroll down to the end of the page) ROUTE:
This trip is mostly off trail. We will pass Castle and scramble Second Mother first. Next, we will drop and travel out to Third Mother. Lastly, we will scramble Castle as we pass it on the way back to Mowich Lake. DIFFICULTY:
This is going to be a strenuous trip with lots of rock scrambling and rocky hiking. The pace will be fairly fast. The distance is about 10 miles with 5000' of up and down. MEETING PLACE:
The meeting location will be at 6:15 AM in Buckley at the start of SR-165, (which is 100 yards SE of where you turn off from SR 410). We will consolidate cars there for the final drive up to Mowich Lake. Buckley is about a 1 hour drive from Green Lake OTHER NOTES:
Axe is not needed.
I recommend, (but not require), that you bring your climbing helmet.
There might be some brush we have to bash through to get up to 3rd Mother. I suggest you wear long pants or zip-off shorts and also bring a pair of gardening or leather gloves. WATER:
We will stop to filter water at the lakes / tarns we go by, so you you should only need to carry about 1-2 quarts if you bring your filter. MAPS:
Following are some jpg images of maps of the location of Peaks and the climbing route. They are fairly large, so they might be slow over a dial-up line. You can print the detailed one to save yourself the cost of buying the USGS. To most efficiently print the detailed file above, see these tips:
