Broken Top/Northwest Ridge

Alpine Scramble - Broken Top/Northwest Ridge

A rare opportunity to bag a challenging higher-end scramble of one of the 20 Highest Cascade Volcanoes in the scenic and entertaining Bend OR area (Smith Rocks, river kayaking, mountain biking, hiking, brew pubs... did I mention the brew pubs?). Will require at least three days (unless you want to drive well into the night either before or after the scramble): two for the 6-7 hour drive down (and back) from the Seattle area; one for the car-to-car scramble itself. Car camping should be reasonably available at campgrounds along the Cascade Scenic Lakes by-way, not far from the trail head parking area (or you may wish to book an AirBnB or motel in or around Bend, for access to the restaurants and ... brew pubs!).

  • Strenuous 3, Technical 4
  • Challenging
  • Mileage: 12.0
  • Elevation Gain: 3,450 ft
  • High Point Elevation: 9,177 ft
  • Pace: Moderately Challenging

We will leave the trail head at 7:30 a.m., Monday, August  26, 2019.

The trail head is the Green Lakes TH along the Cascade Lakes Scenic By-Way (same nicely-maintained road as goes from Bend to the Bachelor Mtn Ski/Recreation area, except you go a few miles further, about 40 minutes outside of Bend).

This trip will only go with a benign weather forecast, which should also produce astonishing views of the South Sister, Bachelor, and other Oregon peaks, volcanoes, lava flows, calderas, etc!  A final call on the weather will be made in a group email sent out Friday or Saturday before the climb.

Those who read trip reports on the route will hear about a short exposed section that many climbers rappel down and another somewhat exposed section, just below the summit, called the Cat Walk.  We will route around the rappel section, though we will have to work our way through the same rock band using our scrambling skills in a less-exposed chimney.  Likewise, we will do the Cat Walk, but it's flat, solid, and -- while it provides a thrillingly-exposed view! -- should not be a concern to most scramblers accustomed to some moderate degree of exposure.  Email the leader if you're unsure what you're getting into!
