Trip
Alpine Scramble - Bismarck Peak
A breathtaking tour along windswept ridge crests that culminate in a helicopter view of Tumac Mountain and its ~80 adjacent lakes. A very strenuous scramble of ~5500’ gain (over 16 miles), with the last bit on the out-and-back to Pear Butte.

This challenging ~5500’/16 mile clockwise traverse is made less so by early morning shade on the Mount Aix trail, afternoon shade on the Pear Butte trail, and their respective trailheads being just a few hundred yards apart. Although we will only come to within ~2.5 miles of Tumac (and ~1000’ above its lakes), this is a very good situation owing to the lakes’ very active insect population (can you say mosquitoes?). Only for folks with excellent conditioning.
It’s a 3 hour drive from the Seattle area so attendees may prefer to drive over the evening before and car camp (plentiful spots). This may be especially appreciated on the drive home after a long and tiring day. Photos from past outings to this area can be seen here.
