Baldy & Tyler Peak

Trip

Alpine Scramble - Baldy & Tyler Peak

Tyler, Peak B, Baldy, Graywolf and possibly Walkinshaw on a 3-day mixed snow and rock scramble. Priority for Kitsap 2024 and 2025 scramble grads (Kitsap 2025 scramble students may sign up with permission contingent on passing the steep snow and rock modules). Others, please wait until May 15 to request permission.

  • Strenuous, Rock Scramble, Strenuous 3, Technical 3
  • Challenging
  • Mileage: 20.0 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 6,500 ft
  • High Point Elevation: 7,200 ft
  • Pace: 1000ft/hr

Tentative itinerary:

Friday, June 13 - Depart by 9:30. (We will have light until 10pm on the north Olypen, so we can afford to start a little bit later.) Take the Tyler Peak trail to the jct and head up to Tyler Peak. May leave big packs somewhere to make the summit of Tyler Peak. Come back, do Peak B, head over the saddle between Tyler and Baldy, set up camp, get water, have a nice evening.

Saturday, June 14 - Early start, break camp, scramble Baldy and descend toward Graywolf. Set up camp between Baldy and Graywolf. Find water or melt snow. Summit Graywolf, potentially using crampons and ice ax, see whether Walkinshaw is doable. Back to camp by sunset.

Sunday, June 15 - Hike back up to Baldy, down and out. Optional meal out in Sequim.

Please be in shape to carry a multi-night pack with scramble gear up 4000ft and then set up camp, share chores, etc... When you request permission, please let us know your experience.

Graywolf and any attempt on Walkinshaw will be exploratory for us. Summits are not guaranteed, and we tend to be conservative.

Tyler Peak Trailhead Friday, June 13, 9am. High clearance vehicles best for this road. Carpooling encouraged.
