Why are we doing this? Climbing has a long history of formal and informal mentorship, with a heavy focus on technical skill but not teaching skill. To help ensure that aspiring climbers across the country have access to quality instructors who create a supportive learning environment and set their students up for success, MEA has drafted standards for climbing education within the UIAA framework. By developing a community of certified educators, we will support a culture of not just climber development, but climbing instructor development, which will ultimately lead to better and more consistent student experiences across the country.

Why should YOU do this? What's in it for you?
  • You'll be part of a national initiative to improve climbing education
  • You'll receive a national (eventually international UIAA) certificate recognizing your proficiency as an educator
  • You'll be connected to a community of volunteer educators across the country who you can climb with, learn from, and bounce ideas off of
  • You'll have an opportunity for mentorship with an IFMGA guide during the assessment
  • The assessments themselves are fun - they're an opportunity to see your peers in action, and learn from their teaching styles
