Principles of Instruction - The Mountaineers - 2020

Outdoor Leadership Course

Principles of Instruction

Participants who complete this course will have the tools they need to design successful learning environments, employ effective teaching techniques, facilitate meaningful assessments, and support student learning.

Teaching would be easy if it was simply telling students how to do something and then coaching them until they do it right. But it's much more than that. It's an art, as they say, to some extent. But there is plenty of  science to it, and this course will help you understand the variables you can control that help you adapt to those you can't in order to set your students up for success.

During this 5-week course, we'll examine the following principles:

  • Creating successful learning environments
  • Using teaching techniques that are appropriate to the situation
  • Instructor self-awareness and student awareness
  • Feedback that supports learning
  • Lesson Planning

Participants who complete this seminar will have the tools they need to set their students and co-instructors up for success.

One week before the course starts, you will receive an invitation to a google classroom.  Each week consists of a 90-minute online classroom session and 1-3 hours of independent work. This course is designed to help you prepare to teach an upcoming course or field trip, using the principles covered in this course. We encourage you to enroll with a course in mind that you plan to teach. The independent work will provide you with some key principles that you can consider for your upcoming course, and the classroom sessions will provide important discussion to add depth to the concepts. You'll also learn some great ideas from your classmates during these classroom sessions.

At the end of the course, you'll have a detailed lesson plan that you'll have an opportunity to get feedback on from your peers and instructors.
