Workshop Description

The longevity of the Mountaineers relies on effective engagement and instruction of its students. Not only are they the future climbers, kayakers, hikers, campers, and more - they are also the future instructors and leaders of our branches. Course and field trip leaders are in the strongest position to impact the legacy of our organization. 

This workshop is designed to strengthen the facilitation skills of course or field trip instructors. It will focus on creating a welcoming learning environment, developing coherent instructional flow, and evaluating learning. Participants will engage in interactive activities and discussion. They will leave with ideas for creating instruction that is centered on the student experience.  

Joe Harper Kowalczyk serves as an Academic Services Director in the School of Public Health at the University of Washington. He has been an educator and administrator for over 12 years, working in university and K-12 settings in Washington, Colorado, Maryland, South Africa, and Switzerland, as well as an instructor with the Tacoma Mountaineers for over five years. Joe's recent adventures have him hiking and camping with his toddler around the mountains of the Pacific Northwest.

Michelle Harper Kowalczyk earned a BA in Elementary Education in 2007 and her MS in Student Affairs in Higher Education in 2010. Since then, she has served in a variety of settings as a classroom educator, teacher trainer, and workshop facilitator. She served as an Associate Director for Leadership and Government in the Center for Student Involvement at Seattle University and assists in instructing lectures through the Tacoma Mountaineers.

This seminar will be delivered online via Zoom meeting. You will need access to a computer or device (preferably with a speaker and camera), as well as high-speed internet. Information about how to log-on to the Zoom meeting will be emailed the day of the session.
