The Essentials of Backpacking Course . . . with an introduction to Off-trail Travel- Lectures 2 & 3
Lecture 2-Food water shelter. Intro to basic survival skills. Medical emergencies. Problem solving hazards exercises - animal encounters – personal issues. Conditioning – best practices and self-assessment options. Planning and organizing your own trips. When, where and how to get permits. Long-distance trips you may want to consider. Outdoor ethics - leaving no trace while protecting the ecosystem. Lecture 3-Where should we go? What will we see and do? Permits? When, how, where? Practical tips on getting permits? Route-finding and more navigation for off trail travel. Navigation – GPS – SPOT and other electronic devices for the backcountry. What to do if lost. Scouting terrain from the map - from local vistas. Friday noon - Saturday - Sunday 5:00pm TBD Weekend Backpack Dependent on snow level. Overnight trip to alpine high country dependent on snow level Students may be able to choose from early or mid-summer trips.
