CANCELED - Adventure Speaker Series-Unexpected Baja & Discoveries along the Road- Allen Mote

Olympia Branch Meet the Mountaineers Adventure Speaker Series and Potluck, featuring "Unexpected Baja: Discoveries Along The Road Less Traveled by Allen Mote"On January 13, 2014, Allen departed Olympia, WA, to explore the backcountry and meet the people of Baja California, Mexico. Against the advice of the US Border Patrol and not speaking Spanish, he crossed the Border at Tecate and with no set schedule spent the next 6 weeks as much as possible off-pavement, away from cities, beyond guidebook coverage, and off the grid. Along the way he encountered pristine deserted beaches, hiked trails and xc in the International Biosphere and mountains, explored ancient cave paintings, forded rivers, re-built road, visited local ranchos, ate locally, joined local fisherman off-shore in a panga, and discovered countless oases and circa 1800s Shangri-la canyons lush with tropical fruit, waterfalls, organic gardens, and villages of brightly painted houses. While whale watching, he experienced “timeless” eye-to-eye moments as he petted mother and baby gray whales. Everywhere he was met kindness, generosity, and a slower pace, where relationships took precedence over tasks, and communities, including expats, joined in building projects and to deliver health care.
