Adventure Speaker Series-Kayaking in the Brooks Range of Alaska – Jim Wilson

Olympia Branch Meet the Mountaineers Adventure Speaker Series and Potluck featuring "Kayaking in the Brooks Range of Alaska by Jim Wilson" In NE Alaska, two rivers of the Brooks Range were paddled using inflatable kayaks for a total distance of 180 miles. The Kongakut River drains to the Arctic Ocean, and the Sheenjek River drains to the Porcupine / Yukon Rivers. The area lies within the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, and provided excellent hiking and wildlife viewing. In part, it is described in the book Two in the Far North by Margaret Murie. The Kongukut landscape on arctic side of the Brooks Range is in tundra while the Sheenjek on the south side of the range begins in tundra and gradually changes to spruce forest. The trip was done the last part of July, first part of August in 2014 with Jim Witte and Clint Loheed.

Who: All members and anyone interested in learning more about the Mountaineers are welcome.

What: The Monthly Meet the Mountaineers Adventure Speaker Presentation and Potluck. Bring a dish to share, your own plate and flatware. No paper tossing at our potlucks!

Where: Friends Meeting House, 3201 Boston Harbor Road. (From I-5, Plum Street, head north, left side, next to Priest Point Park)

When: The first Wednesday of the Month, September to May (excluding November), at 6:00 PM for a shared potluck and socializing hour, followed by an Outdoor Adventure Presentation at 7:00 PM

Why: Meet your fellow Mountaineers, share ideas, learn about others’ escapades and adventures, and connect with our great community of outdoor enthusiasts. (Librarian Maxine Dunkelman will have a selection of books available for checkout to Mountaineer Club members. Contact her at maxdunk@comcast.net if you have special requests.)
