Backpack Leader Town Hall: COVID Considerations for the 2021 Backpacking Season - Online Classroom

Presentation and town hall discussion about leading Mountaineers backpacking trips during COVID in 2021. Intended as an optional resource for Seattle Backpacking leaders but open to all interested leaders.

  • Casual

7:00pm - 8:00pm.  Zoom info will be emailed to participants the morning of the meeting.

This is a seminar and town hall discussion intended for backpacking leaders who sat out the 2020 season due to COVID and are trying to decide whether to lead trips in 2021.  It also also for leaders who have already decided to lead trips in 2021 but want to catch up on the latest information and to talk with other backpacking trip leaders to compare ideas, stories, concerns, etc.

The format is a 30 minute presentation followed by 30 minutes of open discussion.  Presentation topics include:

  • Observations and lessons learned from the 2020 backpacking season.
  • Current Mountaineers  and State of Washington COVID guidance relevant to Mountaineers backpacking trips.
  • Overview of COVID restrictions/policies for major backpacking areas in the region, primarily the three national parks
  • Overview of current and expected travel restrictions to Canada and Oregon.

The "lessons learned" presentation is based on the experience of three leaders  who led a combined 16 Mountaineers backpacking trips in 2020 after the clubwide re-opening in June.

The second half hour is intentionally unscheduled so that we have plenty of time to  ask questions, share experiences, voice concerns, brainstorm, whatever.  Please come prepared to participate.

The date of the seminar was chosen to accommodate leaders who are preparing backcountry permit applications to submit later in March.
