CANCELED - Shi Shi Beach Car Camp

Explore the two most spectacular places on the Olympic Coast, hiking to Cape Flattery on Saturday and Shi Shi Beach on Sunday, camping Saturday night on the beach at popular Hobuck Beach Resort Campground near Neah Bay.

This car camp consists of a day hike to Cape Flattery on Saturday, camping Saturday night at Hobuck Beach Campground near Neah Bay and hiking to Shi Shi Beach on Sunday.  Registration for the car camp is by registering for both of the day hikes.  Leader permission is required to register for each day hike to assure that each person registering will participate in both day hikes and the overnight encampment.

We will meet at 11:30 AM Saturday in the parking lot of Washburn's General Store, 1450 Bayview Ave, Neah Bay, WA  98357.  There one Makah Recreation Pass must be purchased for each car that does not already have one ($10 last year).   Hot lunch food can also be purchased there, as well as firewood and anything else you need.   There are restrooms there also.  From there we drive the short distance to Hobuck Beach Resort Campground, where we pay the $25 per car entrance fee and pick up a pass to hang from the rear view mirror  along with the Makah Recreation Pass.

Then we pick out a campsite, set up camp and have lunch.  After lunch, we will caravan to the Cape Flattery Trailhead, where there are restrooms and the Makah Recreation Pass must be displayed by each car.  We will hike in a half mile to the multiple viewpoints on the bluff overlooking the ocean in different directions.

After hiking out, we have the option to visit the Makah Museum in Neah Bay, which has an admission fee of about $5 each and has fascinating artifacts dug from the remains of an ancient Indian village at Ozette.  Then we return to camp, with time left over to visit magnificent Hobuck Beach, adjacent to the campground, before starting to prepare our camp dinner.  Following dinner, we will have smores around the campfire.

Sunday morning we will have a camp breakfast, pack up camp and at 9:30 AM drive to the Shi Shi Beach trailhead., where the Makah Recreation Pass must be displayed by each car.    The hike to our lunch spot by Petroleum Creek will take about two hours, with the last mile being on the beach.  There are restrooms at Hobuck Beach Resort Campground and the Shi Shi Beach trailhead  and there is an outhouse near our lunch spot at the beach.

After lunch, we'll hike for 20 minutes to Point of the Arches to observe the rock tunnels and caves and marine life there around the 2:06 PM low tide.  If we stay on schedule, we will have an hour to explore around there before heading back to the trailhead.

On the drive home, we'll have the option for a dinner stop at the Breakwater Restaurant in Clallam Bay, which is around a 45 minute drive from the trailhead and has a spectacular view of the Strait of Juan de Fuca and Vancouver Island beyond it.
