Slide closes Glacier Creek Road

Glacier Creek Road, often used by Mountaineers for trips and course events in the Mount Baker area, has been closed to vehicles at Thompson Creek Bridge because of a washout about seven miles from the start of the popular Heliotrope Ridge Trail.

Also known as Forest Service Road 39, the road is accessed off of Mount Baker Highway about one mile from the Glacier Public Service Center.

On May 14 about 18 inches of asphalt had eroded, according to sources at the Mount Baker Ranger District office. They said either heavy rainfall or a swollen Glacier Creek caused the washout.

It is unknown when the road might be reopened.
