Hikers - Educational Opportunities/Confidence BuildersThe Tacoma Branch regularly offers three courses of interest to hikers. (1) Map and compass work is taught in the Navigation Course which focuses on reading the map and the terrain and on learning how to use your compass. After taking this course you will find that studying the map before a trip will give you a good idea of the terrain you will be hiking in and more confidence in how to use your compass and map to understand where you are in relation to the surrounding area. (2) Wilderness First Aid and MOFA, Mountaineering Oriented First Aid, both offer invaluable information and skills training to help you deal with emergency situations and to better prepare yourself and your equipment before each trip. Hiking in wilderness areas, even on established trails, puts us out of range of a speedy 911 response. The more MOFA trained hikers on a trip the better equipped the trip will be to deal with emergencies that might occur. (3) Basic information on equipment and conditioning for hiking and backpacking is offered by the Hiking/Backpacking Committee in our evening introduction sessions held throughout the spring and summer.
