Harvey Manning (1925-2006): Northwest icon, author dies
On Sunday, November 12, Northwest icon Harvey Manning died at the age of 81. Manning was a larger-than-life figure in the outdoor history of the Northwest, defending wilderness areas from unfettered logging, and instilling a sense of stewardship in outdoor enthusiasts through his very idiosyncratic writing.
The flagship title of Mountaineers Books, "Mountaineering: Freedom of the Hills," was largely brought about through the efforts of Harvey Manning. One could easily make the argument that Mountaineers Books, one of the largest outdoor book publishers in North America, exists because of Manning. Through this book and others, including the "100 Hikes" series he co-authored with the late Ira Spring, Manning persuaded his readers to think of the larger picture, asking them to become stewards and advocates of wilderness areas.
The Mountaineers, and all residents of the Pacific Northwest who appreciate our region's wilderness owe Harvey Manning a huge thanks. His impact was great, and his death is a tremendous loss.
