Staircase Area of Olympic National Park Closed Due to Bear Gulch II Fire

The Staircase area of Olympic National Park has been closed due to hazardous conditions along the Staircase access road (Forest Service Road 24) outside the park boundary. The closure includes the Staircase campground, picnic area, ranger station and all trailheads.

The 400-acre Bear Gulch II fire is burning in extremely steep terrain just uphill from the access road. Boulders and burning logs are likely to fall or roll onto the road, making the closure necessary.

In addition to the Staircase facilities, the North Fork Skokomish River, Wagon Wheel and Staircase Rapids Trails are also closed in the park. The Mt. Rose and Dry Creek Trails are closed in the adjacent National Forest. While these closures are necessary for a limited area and include a portion of the lake due to helicopter operations, most of the Lake Cushman area is available for recreation as usual. Mt. Ellinor and Mt. Washington areas continue to be open to recreational opportunities. For more information, please visit either the Olympic National Park or Olympic National Forest websites.
