Here's something interesting that came to The Mountaineers office. It's a series of hikes hosted by the Lewis and Clark Bicentennial Association.
A Whale of a Hike
On January 7, 1805 William Clark, Sacagawea, and the Corps of Discovery crossed Tillamook Head from their Seaside salt works to Cannon Beach. They came to trade for whale oil and blubber, which, the Nehalams were salvaging from a beached whale.
On January 7th, 2005, 200 years later, the Lewis & Clark Bicentennial is sponsoring a hike across the same trail to commemorate the event. In addition to the main hike, a difficult 5.5 mile route, there will also be a number of shorter hikes.
The LCBA is asking interested people to pre-register for the hikes through the website www.cannonbeach.org. The cost of the hikes is $10 per person, $25 per family and the registration deadline is December 20. All participants receive a commemorative pin and certificate.
In addition to the hikes there will be a full program of activities in Cannon Beach for the whole family including a play at the local theater, lectures, children's activities, as well as Cannon Beach's wealth of art galleries, shops and fine dining establishments. Visitors will also want to consider visiting Fort Clatsop and walking the new "Fort to Sea" trail a lasting legacy of the Bicentennial Commemoration or Cape Disappointment in Washington and retracing Lewis and Clark's first view of the Pacific.
