Seattle Arts & Lectures & North Cascades Institute Present "Wilderness and Imagination"
Tuesday, December 6 - 7:30 p.m.
Seattle Arts & Lectures (SAL) and North Cascades Institute (NCI) are pleased to present the special event "Wilderness and Imagination" on Tuesday, December 6, 7:30 p.m., at Benaroya Hall in the S. Mark Taper Foundation Auditorium. This special evening features internationally acclaimed Arctic photographer Subhankar Banerjee; noted ornithologist, bird illustrator, and author David Allen Sibley; and poet and environmental activist Terry Tempest Williams.
"Wilderness and Imagination" focuses on the vital relationship of natural resources and culture. Subhankar Banerjee took the breathtaking photos featured in the landmark photographic exhibit, Arctic National Wildlife Refuge: Seasons of Life and Land. Preservationists consider The Sibley Guide to Birds (2000) a monumental achievement. Terry Tempest Williams' book Refuge: An Unnatural History of Family and Place (1991) is cited as a classic of American nature writing. The speakers will comment on ways in which the natural world has historically been perceived and consumed in our society, as well as the resulting impact on environmental policies.
For tickets and information, please call (206) 621-2230 or visit http://www.lectures.org. Subject to availability, tickets can be purchased at Benaroya Hall on the evening of the event. The box office opens at 5:15 p.m. and accepts payment via cash or check.
Banerjee's photographic exhibit, Arctic National Wildlife Refuge: Seasons of Life and Land, is on display at the Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture in Seattle through December 31, 2005. ** Your "Wilderness and Imagination" ticket stub gives you 1/2 off admission to the Burke plus a complimentary poster.**
"Wilderness and Imagination" is generously underwritten by the Consulate General of Canada and the Lannan Foundation with assistance from The Mountaineers Books.
Seattle Arts & Lectures (SAL) is a nonprofit literary organization devoted to exploring ideas and the imagination through language. SAL provides adults and children with opportunities to meet writers and cultural thinkers, and to engage in meaningful discussions about literature, culture, and society.
