A Talk with Elizabeth Hawley

In the post World War II era when few women lived life on their own terms, a young Elizabeth Hawley left her job as a researcher for Fortune magazine and set out to travel the globe. In 1960, she returned to Kathmandu in Nepal, an exotic and remote destination that captured her imagination. Over the next four decades, she built a life that even she could not have pictured.

Hawley became the mountaineering historian of the Himalayas. She is the final word on mountaineering achievements on the roof of the world, and respected (and feared) by many of the world's top climbers.

Bernadette MacDonald traveled to Nepal to find out more about Hawley. She returned with video of her one-on-one interview as well as photos and stories featuring a virtual who's who of the international climbing community.

Join us in welcoming Bernadette to The Mountaineers in Seattle on Thursday, November 10 at 7 p.m. This event is a benefit for the Friends of The Mountaineers Library, and there is a suggested donation of $5 for the talk.
