On the Ridge Between Life and Death
With David Roberts
Thursday, September 29 at 7pm ~ Seattle REI

REI welcomes celebrated author and climber David Roberts for a slide show and look into his latest book, On the Ridge Between Life and Death: A Climbing Life Reexamined. In 35 years of writing about climbing and exploring, David Roberts has covered the genre's most celebrated achievements, and its most heart-wrenching tragedies. Along the way he has developed a unique and arguably controversial perspective on risk taking. Join Roberts for a night of breath-taking images, stories, and a unique discussion about risks-identifying them, mitigating them, and accepting them.

"Nobody alive writes better about mountaineering and its peculiar adherents than David Roberts, my mentor and friend of thirty-some years, and this is Professor Roberts' magnum opus," says Jon Krakauer, about Roberts' new book. "Told with wrenching candor, On the Ridge Between Life and Death may disturb you, or even make you angry, but you will not be able to put it aside."

David Roberts is the author of 17 books, most recently The Pueblo Revolt and Four Against the Arctic. His writing has appeared in numerous publications including National Geographic, Atlantic Monthly, Smithsonian, and National Geographic Adventure. He has won the Prix Méditerrané, the Prix du Salon de Livre de Passy, the Prix d'Autrans, the American Alpine Club Literary Award, and the grand prize at the Banff Mountain Book Festival. His books The Mountain of My Fear and Deborah were ranked by National Geographic Adventure in 2001 among the 100 best adventure books ever written. He lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
