**News and Events: September 9: Hike the new William O. Douglas Trail

Thu, August 11, 2005 10:28 AM

We received this in our email today, and it sounds like a worthy reason to take a few days off to go hiking. U.S. Supreme Court Justice Douglas was a legendary figure, both in Mountaineers lore and on the national level. Douglas served for more years than any other justice, sitting on the bench from 1939-1975. Put another way, his tenure overlapped the presidencies of Roosevelt, Truman, Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, and Ford.

On Sept. 9, 2005, the first ever William O. Douglas Trail hike will occur. This is a new 75-mile continuous trail linking Yakima to Mt. Rainier, crossing through 12 different ecosystems with tremendous biologic diversity. Along the trail there will be multiple sites for historic, natural, and cultural interpretation. Over a five-day period we will walk in the footsteps of the late U.S. Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas, who grew up in Yakima and who, through hiking the hills and mountains around Yakima, overcame the twin challenges of poverty and polio. Hike the entire 75 miles with us or only part of the distance.
