On Tuesday, July 19, during KUOW's "Morning Edition" 9 a.m. segment, Mike Gauthier and Bruce Barcott will be talking about The Mountain. If you've missed the broadcast, listen to it from their archives.
Here's the information from KUOW:
"The mountain is out" quite often now that summer has arrived. That's Mount Rainier, for those of you who aren't locals. At 14,410 feet, Mount Rainier is largely wrapped in snow and ice throughout the year, but the surrounding park is full of life; old growth forests and meadows. About two million people visit the mountain every year. A couple weeks ago, four climbers were rescued successfully after falling during a climb. How do you rescue someone off of Rainier? How can you successfully climb it? What is the history of the mountain and the National Park surrounding it? What creatures live there? What would happen if Rainier erupted? What are some of the natural fascinations of the area?
