Recently, The Mountaineers had the good fortune to host the premiere of Back to Life: The Iron Goat Trail. The documentary, narrated by well-known travel expert Rick Steves, tells the story of a unique Washington State recreational trail and the volunteers who built it. The Mountaineers' own Ruth Ittner, who conceived the project, figures prominently in the film. Below is information on the film and when it will air locally on KCTS.
After more than 15 years of effort, the Iron Goat Trail is nearly complete. This summer, for the first time, hikers will be able to follow the newly constructed nine-mile-long trail from start to finish. Beginning just below Stevens Pass at the former town of Wellington, the trail follows the old track bed of the Great Northern Railway to Scenic on U.S. Highway 2.
The Iron Goat Trail is the result of thousands of volunteer hours and the support of more than 50 companies and organizations, including Volunteers for Outdoor Washington, the U.S. Forest Service, the Washington State Department of Transportation and The Mountaineers. Barrier-free for persons with disabilities for much of its length, the gentle trail includes more than 40 historical interpretive signs and displays, showcasing the history of the Great Northern and such momentous events as the 1910 Wellington avalanche, the deadliest in the history of North America.
KCTS Television will be broadcasting this inspirational documentary just in time for hiking season. The documentary film airs on the following dates:
Thursday, June 2 at 10 p.m.
Wednesday, June 8 at 4:30 a.m.
Saturday, June 11 at 4:30 a.m.
Thursday, June 23 at 4:30 a.m.
Sunday, June 26 at 10 a.m.
