Service & Learning for youth groups : Mount Rainier, North Cascades & San Juan Island National Parks

Beautiful views, fresh air, and satisfying service learning projects await youth groups at Mount Rainier, North Cascades, and San Juan Island National Parks this summer. The National Parks and EarthCorps are inviting youth groups (of 10-16 students plus chaperones) to help with day-long and overnight service projects from July to Labor Day, 2005.

Students will learn about park lands, National Parks Service careers, and natural resources while developing restoration and teamwork skills. Workshops are fun and rewarding. Students generally work 4 hours each day, and have time for scenic hikes and games. Last year, students worked hard, learned a great deal, and had a fabulous time.

Students must be 13-17 years of age. Groups need one active, involved adult chaperone for every 8 students. Youth groups interested in hands-on work and natural science education are invited to participate. Parks need help restoring wild lands and monitoring natural resources.

Students will be asked to help with: * Remove non-native plants * Plant native plants * Record their impressions of the parks through art, writing or photography * Help parks maintain trails.

If space is available, we will help arrange group camping at North Cascades and Mt. Rainier National Parks and waive all camping and entrance fees. Please note there is no camping available on-site at San Juan Island NHP. Please call early to make reservations.

To register, call Chris La Pointe at EarthCorps, (206) 322-9296 x217 or e-mail chris@earthcorps.org
