April 23: Volunteer for the Olympic Coast Cleanup
Throughout the year various objects wash up on the Olympic Coast, causing not only a visual eyesore but possible health hazards. And every year for the past five years, organizations and individuals have come together in April to perform the worthwhile (if not backbreaking) work of cleaning up the beach. Last year alone, 24 tons of garbage and debris was gathered by cleanup volunteers! The sixth annual Olympic Coast Cleanup is schedule this year for April 23, coinciding nicely with Earth Day.
The Mountaineers have had several volunteers attend the cleanup, and we encourage all of our members to attend. Here's your opportunity to give back to the environment and have fun while you are at it! The organizers have some special incentives for volunteers: free camping, discount rates at lodges, group campfires, and free hotdog/hamburger feeds throughout the various sites.
Two information sessions for the cleanup are scheduled in March:
Wednesday, March 30, 7 p.m. at the Dungeness River Audubon Center in Sequim
Thursday, March 31, 7 p.m. at the Seattle REI store
Volunteers are asked to register before April 9. Find more information on the cleanup as well as registration details at olympiccoastcleanup.us/
We hope to see you out there!
