OLYMPIA - Staff at Fort Casey State Park (located on Whidbey Island near Coupeville) want to inform the public of temporary closures. Due to a cleanup project to remove creosote and pressure-treated wood materials, the beach area will be closed 8 a.m., Feb. 28 through 6 p.m., March 2. The campground will be closed from 9 a.m., March 1 through 5 p.m., March 3.
The project is a joint venture of the Department of Natural Resources, Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission and the Island County Marine Resources Committee (Northwest Straits Commission). All creosote and pressure-treated wood materials will be removed from a stretch of beach extending from Keystone Harbor to the west end of the Camp Casey property, which includes the entire Fort Casey State Park beach west of Keystone Harbor. Recent scientific research has pointed out the toxicity of creosote in the environment. It is especially damaging to life forms in either the egg or larval life stages. With 126 known chemical components found in creosote, the potential for toxic activity is very high.
If you have questions about the closure, please call the Washington State Parks Northwest Region office at (360) 755-9231.
